Ed O'Brien

GUITARS

Fender Stratocasters

Ed’s black Stratos are two Eric Clapton Signature models from the 90s featuring 3 Gold Lace Sensor pick-ups.
They can be distinguished by the stickers on the bodies.

Starting from 2000 these two guitars have been modified: they now feature Fernandes Sustainer Kit FSK-401 which is composed of two parts (bridge and neck pick-ups). The middle pick-up of the left pictured Strato has remained the same whilst that of the other has been replaced with a Silver Lace Sensor. Ed uses Dunlop
Nylon .88 mm picks.

thei

Rickenbacker 360 Fireglo

Rickenbacker 360 12 strings Jetglo

Rickenbacker semi-hollow guitars have always been Ed’s favourites.

Two identical red
models from the 90s
 are used by Ed on
songs like The Bends,
Bones, Karma Police,
and
No Surprises.

A twelve-strings
black model is used
on Airbag and
How to Disappear
Completely.

Gibson ES

These two cherry red models from the 60s have become,  through years,
favourite of Ed's.

The left pictured model is a Gibson ES 330 TD
featuring a trapezoid tail and  P-90 “dog ear” pick-ups and it's used on
Talk Show Host and Fake Plastic Trees.

The right pictured model is a Gibson ES 335 with  Gibson humbuckers and no tail and it's used on Scatterbrain, A Wolf at the Door, Idioteque, A Punchup at a Wedding and You and Whose Army?.

Gibson Les Paul

Fender Telecaster

This guitar has introduced by Ed
in 2002 for Myxomatosis.
It’s a black model with
golden hardware
and humbucking  pick-ups.
It's been dropped now in favour
of a Fernandes Native Pro

Ed adopted this blonde
Telecaster
from the 2000 tours.
It has standard
features except a button
switch between
the tone knob and the
volume knob.
This guitar is used by Ed in
songs such
as Optimistic, Morning Bell,
I Might Be Wrong
and Knives Out.

The “Plank” Guitar

A custom handmade guitar built by
“Plank”, Radiohead’s technician,
from different guitars: the semi-hollow
body is probably made out of a Rickenbacker, the neck comes
from a Gibson.
It seems to be armed with
Dual Red Lace Sensors
both in the neck and in the bridge,
a tone and a volume control,
a pick-up selector and
a bridge with whammy bar.
The “Plank” guitar is used by Ed on songs like Just, My Iron Lung,
Climbing Up the Walls
and many old songs.

Rickenbacker 360 Yellowglo
Ed’s only other guitar, no more used because it’s been probably stolen in 1995.
It was a yellow model with a black pickguard, standard features and a lot of stickers.
It can be seen in any early performance of the band and in the videos of Creep and Anyone Can Play Guitar.
